My big babies were awesome yesterday morning. I sat with them for 15 minutes in the morning, and and about half an hour in the afternoon too. I had a crazy day ransacking the veggie garden before we get a frost. Still have about 100 pounds of green tomatoes to go! But I did get some more pics of my girls and boy. I don't think I have any of the 20 or so chickens hanging out with them in the barn or should I say the nice warm, deep dry straw.

Claire, what beautiful pictures of your cows, becoming so self-sufficient is one of the nicest feelings in the world, I wish that I could have a cow. That would make my dream, I love fresh cow's milk, and clearly recall the taste, we had a Jersey about 27 years ago. Can't find fresh cow's milk anywhere, people are terrified to sell it I guess. Oh well, maybe one day I will have a cow, only my Husband and myself when we move, but I think I could become a great cheesemaker, and that would justify a cow, smiling. You gathered a nice amount of honey this year, beautiful. I too am a beekeeper. I had 9 colonies last winter, but lost 8 to bad queens and not building up enough for the winter cluster. One came through with flying colours. I did not split this colony this year, it didn't build up that good, so I only got a about a litre of honey
. Oh well, wanted to leave them lots for this winter for next year. Have a wonderful day, CynthiaM.

Thanks everyone. I am enjoying the sights, the sounds, and smell of them. And I got to enjoy the feel as well, cos Emma let me curry comb 3/4 of her while she ate hay tonight. She seemed to like it. I guess it wasn't too irritating. The dandy brush didn't seem to do as good a job! Gotta get them tame then I can milk them. I am so excited to be able to do that.
One thing, the barn hasn't had cows in it in about 20 months. When I left on Sunday it still smelled the same, kind of straw hay old wood. When I got home Friday night it smelled like big Grass Eating Mammals in a good comfortable way. Even upstairs.
Cynthia I'm sure you'll be able to have your own at some time, sorry about your bees, hopefully the two hives do well next year. I got one existing colony with the equipment in April and 2 nucs from somewhere else in June. The nucs have grown and there is a nice crown of honey that I left and the big hive did really well as we had them right in the middle of two 15 acre alfalfa fields, along the fenceline between the fields. I might split it next year as it was much healthier that I expected when I opened it up in May. I used a solar melter to purify the was cappings and I have a small amount of my own beeswax. I'm thinking of making some lip balm with it in, or a couple of votive candles. It smells heavenly as does the alfalfa honey. I hope your bees are fine with the move.

OK when I left them to get my camera they were galloping around the barnyard! Is that normal? Kicking up their heels and yippeeing? I just let them out after letting them get used (and apparently bored of) the barn. We got the leccy strand up too. Nobody got zapped yet, but they know what it is. They pulled up short a couple of times right near it. They were calmed down for the pics, but seemed pretty content mowing the grass in there.

The kicking up of heels and running to and fro when they are let out into a new place is normal. It is there way of expressing their excitement. Ours would be excited about the green grass.

They look fantastic out there Skeffling. I could hardly stop looking at the pictures. Happy, happy cows.

Thanks, it was nice to see them kicking up their heels. It was a little alarming too went they went thundering by! It's funny I'm having to get used to something big moving about at the end of the garden in the barnyard! It's been empty for over 2 years! The white is eye catching and you can see them at night under the barnyard light easily. I hope to have 30 or more eventually (don't tell Nathan)!
