Re: Partridge Chanteclers, how do you sex them?

Don't know about the sandhill birds, but I got some from Ideal Poultry, via Roblyn Eyrie, and they were under sized. Nice colour but small. I think they wory more about colour than size in the states

SLF
Partridge is a hard colour to get consistently, plus as noted by both our Roblyn Eyrie (Ideal Poultry) birds and Labman's Sandhill birds size seems to be a secondary consideration in US breeding stocks. There are plenty of good breeders on here so we shouldn't have to import too much US stock in the future. Cdnhorse has some excellent stock and a very good breeding program. The three 19 week PCs in the first picture I posted are from eggs I got from her in the spring and are very nice birds.  I have a few nice hens and should get a good mix with the new roosters in the spring. It does take many years to get consistently good results, but it can be very gratifying.

Re: Partridge Chanteclers, how do you sex them?

As much as I enjoy the individual birds company, their eggs and meat, entertainment value of their antics, another bonus of keeping them is the breeding, genetics, and preservation side of things.  I am certain I am not alone, but it does give an intellectual side to keeping the breeds as well as satisfying the gambling, chancing side of things.  Also I imagine the satisfaction of having proof you were right in your decisions by the bird in front of you has to feel pretty good.  We are still a long way from that as we are still trying out breeds to see if they are worthy, while selecting and building on the small numbers we do have.  Just developing an eye for correct form and seeing others opinions is fun to start with.     :woohoo:

When I was first starting on looking at getting chickens about 4 years ago, I came across Cdn horse's website and read it eagerly with history and the birds.  Part of the reason I chose Chanties!  I assumed with the distance, I'd just have to buy locally, I know that isn't true now! :cheer:

I adore my Blue Laced Red & Silver Penciled Wyandottes, Euskal Oiloas, Welsummers, Barnevelders, Sumatras, Silver Dorkings, Partridge Chanteclers,  EE Americaunas, Penedesencas, Blue Andalusians & Silkies, Lavender & Millie D'Uccles, Cuckoo Marans & Spangled Orloffs, Belted Galloways, Tetley the Border terrier, Henry my black cat, and still waiting for my three humane society barn cats.
