Question about fan in homemade incubator

I almost have the incubator built, and am about to mount a small fan from an old computer.  What I was wondering is do you want the fan blowing directly on the eggs, or blowing across the top of them, or what?  Does it really matter?

Re: Question about fan in homemade incubator

I mounted a teeny computer fan in my Hovabator, and found it best to blow sideways, over the tops of the eggs rather than directly down onto them. My plan was to get the air moving around rather than just blasting on the eggs. I think you may have to move the fan a few times to see how it works best for circulation in your bator. Don't make it permanent until you know where it works best.

Re: Question about fan in homemade incubator

In my 1588 incubator it is straight down.  But it is also a very gentle fan.  If you put your hand on it you can hardly feel anything.
But if it is a more powerful fan-i'd point it at your heat source.  I believe that in a brower top hatcher the fan is under the light bulb which gives off the heat.

Re: Question about fan in homemade incubator

My pc fan blows well over the top of the eggs.  Here's a pic of the inside of my homemade 'bator.

Re: Question about fan in homemade incubator

Nice, E3G.  I am thinking about making one myself.  It looks like all you need is a foam cooler, a fan, a bulb and socket and something to control the temperature by turning the bulb on and off, and some odd bits of hardware.  Have I missed anything?

Doug, the baby bunny warmer is also a whiz with electricity.  I might just give him a new project.
