I'm in Killarney, Calgary. Looking for layers... We have a great home for them here at the Killarney Urban Farm. Can anyone help?

What kind of layer do you want? Heritage? Commercial? I don't have much for sale now, but in the spring we will all be hatching up a storm.
Killarney Urban Farm? I've never heard of it before. Tell us about what you do. Are you growing food for a restaurant? Family use? Community use? Sounds interesting for sure!

Hi Paul
What can you tell us about the home provided for these layers?

Do you want unique and rare Heritage or run of the mill birds?

I have a 1950's shed on my property in Killarney community of Calgary, about 35' from my backdoor. The shed is the new chicken condo coop. They have been housed here for almost a year. We have a nutrient rich mix of feeds and the girls receive table scraps from two high end veggie restaurants in town. They have daily visits from the local kids/neighbours. Very popular, almost like biology 101 for the community. We try to share the eggs with the local women's transition house. We are trying to get up to 6 eggs/day. We believe in the ethical treatment of animals. They all have names. They are like family. Both front and rear yards are for growing vegetables.

We're looking for birds that lay good eggs. I have an Alderman coming here to tour the farm and would like to add a few more hens so we are up to 6 eggs/day

Does this mean you might actually be able to influence City Council to rescind the bylaw banning poultry from backyards?
Very cool. And good for you and the group.
The Calgary Food Council looks very promising and a wonderful concept.

The challenge to the Calgary bylaw 27, is based on a Universal Human Right to Food, ratified by Parliament 7 times in the last 60 years. We promote the connection between eggs and this most basic of human rights. We support the responsible and ethical treatment of chickens. A FUNdraiser is being organized, will let the ACE group know the details. Ideas welcomed.

ACE is an amazing, 21st Century, Ad Hoc, wired resource. As we build the framework for urban hens in Calgary, your advice will be valuable.

CLUCK would have a little more leverage if those members were to focus on assisting a struggling heritage breed of poultry. It wouldn't just be "I want chickens" Check out rare breed Canada.
My own 2 cents worth

Just talked with Paul, definately a man with a mission.
Doug,
I will 'encourage' the heritage breeds.

I am pretty sure I know Paul from when I worked in Calgary at a vet clinic, he is definately the man for the job.

thanks for the thumbs up!
CLUCK could use the expertise ACE has.
I would be happy to share your suggestions with CLUCK on all aspects of chickens, including the diversification of the species with heritage breeds.

CLUCK is building a Chicken Owners Manual for Calgary City Council...
We would like to invite ACE members to assist with building this document. It will be presented to City Council as part of an ammendment/exemption to the present bylaw 27... so a 27.2 Exemption for Urban Chickens. This is similar in nature to the pigeon exemption, which includes:
1. Membership in a group (CLUCK)
2. Passing a written test on the care of chickens (the reason for the manual)
3. Inspection of coop area and chicken run by a 'certified' CLUCK representative.
This should certainly satisfy the needs of council and give us a chicken leg to stand on.
If you could add a chapter to the Chicken Owners Manual Table of Contents, what would be the title? What would you suggest we include in the CLUCK manual?
