Nice work!

Re: My Preservation Hatch

Well the hatch is all done and i have 29 new babies out of 36 eggs i put in there.  2 i think were dudes or died early on, i must of missed them.  One was rotten  and 3 weren't strong enough to make it out.
So i say a wonderful first hatch with the new Sportsman :ohyea:

So does this mean i have to retire the Sportsman for the winter :crying:

Re: My Preservation Hatch

:congrats: on such a good hatch rate and all those lovely <img src=" />  What kind of pennies did you get?  Our black penny chicks had flesh coloured toes, and black legs!

Was it a brand new model Sportsman or was a "new to you" one?  The reason I ask is I have two "new to me" wafer one and am still trying to decide whether to replace the wafer with digital or not.  If it was an older one was it easy to keep the temp constant and where did you have it located?

Re: My Preservation Hatch

How many pennys did you get, and what was their condition? I got 4 but 2 died by two days old and the other two both had leg issues (which I fixed). It was such a difference from the marans that were all healthy.

Re: My Preservation Hatch

Mine were supposed to be partridge. Two had the partridge markings, but two were dark brown. I can faintly see the lines so they may just be dark partridge. I lost one of each color. I'm curious to see what the dark one turns into.

Re: My Preservation Hatch

JE we got the black pennies this year shipped as day olds.  I am so glad we have them though I ordered 25 BCMs, not pennies.  We were sent 30 birds and 2 died in transit (one very stinky), and we lost one roo at about 14 weeks with a distended watery filled crop.  We have 8 pullets, about 6 or so black penny-like roos, but we have about 13 obvious marans, or marans crosses lots of copper with penny clavell combs etc and every one of them male.  We were told they "mixed up the chicks' and could have had black marans, black copper or black penny in there, so I totally scrutinized them and took great close ups of all the different types.  I took tons of pics and lost three weeks worth of the files including pics in the summer and realized recently those were in there.  The pennies they were penguiny looking, paler under belly, black back, legs and foot, but toes were flesh coloured.   Some of the black pennies had white tips to the first wing feathers when they came in, but not one has white now.

Re: My Preservation Hatch

I was wondering if there were any mix ups.  I had some marked as MN but i just thought it was the french for Marans Noir .  I have lots of black babies with white tips on their wings.
I will post pics in a bit
