I'm going twice next week. The 11th is the 2nd day of the poultry show, and is supposed to be the best day?? They also have the Grand Prix dressage in the afternoon. The next day is the dressage freestyle at night. Can't miss it. ![]()
I also want a trip through the sheep and cow barns. It puzzles me though that they don't have anything re the Dexters or the Belted Galloways. Only the big time commercial dairy/beef cattle. Maybe they have a suggestion box....??
It seems hard to believe that last year at the Royal was the first time I saw a chicken lay an egg.
What a year.

We have six Brown Swiss heifers going down next week. I'll be there on the 13th showing. They are trying to push the Brown Swiss show out too. They used to have a minimum of 50 head per breed and increased that to 75 head per breed or you don't get a show.

So then, how do they introduce new breeds. Do the breed organizationsdo any lobbying or promoting??

I went to the Royal for the first time ever two years ago,
the first to see a Galloway show that didn't happen, was advertized online on the Royal site and got here and no sign of it ANYWHERE, I had printed up the online sheet and just got blank looks from the information people. It was the only reason we went!
We had booked a hotel room and had committed to stay over. We ended up watching all the English Shorthhorn show and auction and learnt a ton about confirmation and what makes a good cow etc. I made notes and it was fun to watch the auction which happened before the show, the top selling bull didn't win....
Last year, no sign of advertizing for a Galloway show, but apparently one happened there before the Royal Winter fair officially opened. I was very disappointed. I think it was the same this year, per a member of the Canadian Galloway Association. Gubi, I think they are pushing out the less common breeds which is very surprising in this day and age and not a good marketing ploy in my eyes. How are people going to even know these shows are on if they aren't listed? With more people interested in preserving rare and heritage breeds and local food, I think they are making a mistake. Just shows you $ makes the world go round.
We went last year for the poultry show and I did enjoy it,
spent about 5 hours poring over them all, seeing who won and why this bird was better than that. Also fell in love with quite a few breeds I hadn't seen in person before....mostly turkeys, and blue andalusians!
I have a few fuzzy photos taken last year on my old phone camera, of the sebs etc.
The exhibits and veggie show were great, and the goat petting zoo was cool too. The butter carvings were awesome and even the honey show was educational. The year before last we spent ages in the Biodiesel trailer seeing how it's made and plan to do that here eventually.
Not planning on going this year, maybe next year if we can figure out the Galloway show. Enjoy the show there is so much to see

Horse show and Dog shows thats what the Royal is interested in that's where the money is at. When it commes to agriculture they would be happy with there was only the DFO display to show them how to milk a cow of every breed.
Until about 3 years ago we always had the Swiss jodelchoir sing at our show but the last year they were there, it was soo noisy from the dog show besides us the guys in the choir counldn't even hear themselfs sing so they decidet not to waste their time anymore! Try showing a heifer or a cow in a strange building with AC/DC blareing out of the loudspeaker that you have to lead her by in the showring, it can be a challange! Saying all that the Royal is still a great venue to show of your best cattle to people all over the world.
It is always funny watching the City kids walk by the catlle with their noses plugged. All i can smell is fresh straw, shavings and feed.
SLF try beeing at the other end not knowing if you have to hire peolpe to look after cattle at the royal. good people are hard to find to look after your best cattle. The last few years the royal told us we can have a show if we have 75 head of cattle there. Last year we had 76! this year we have 104 entered. If we have less then 75 entered I guess if we would havebeen lucky to get a phone call telling us not to bother bringing the cattle! maybe that happend to the galloway breeders?
bufforpsgirl maybe the best bet would be to have a display booth through rarebreeds canada?

We have been every year for the past 4 years with the Pony Club. Our kids love the indoor eventing and the jump off (gamblers choice) that usually takes place the Tuesday evening. Last year was the first year we looked at the chickens, likely why we have chickens now! Some of us ditch school and spend the day :)
